If you’re thinking about making money online as an independent contractor, maybe transcribing is the way to go.
If you haven’t heard about Rev, it is a great place to get paid by completing transcribing projects. In this Rev transcription review, I will cover why it’s a pretty cool place along with some not so cool info that you should be aware of.
Overall Ranking: 8/10
What is Rev?
- It’s a service that allows you to make money from home.
How does it work?
- If you get accepted, you’re able to accept projects that pay you on a weekly basis to transcribe audio, video along with translating video from one language to another.
Who can apply?
- Global Opportunity
You may come across transcribing jobs online and some services require a fee for you to apply. The good news is that legit jobs don’t require a fee when you apply and that is the case for Rev.
If you’re thinking about applying, know that you will have to go through an application process to get accepted, but once you’re in, you can accept assignments and earn a weekly income in no time.
Who Is Rev For?
Everyone has skills and if you’re pretty good at following directions, writing, or even if you are bilingual, you may want to consider Rev as a way to earn money completely from home.
I don’t want to leave anyone out, so if you’re,
- A Student
- A Stay at home parent
- Work outside the home
- Live outside the USA
- want another source of income
Then don’t hesitate to apply.
One of my favorite attributes regarding Rev is how flexible their transcribing projects are. What I mean by this is that you don’t need that quiet environment or work certain hours such as from 8 am to 3 pm in order to get paid.
If you have other obligations and only have a few hours to spare throughout your day, then you can accept or decline a project at your convenience.
Before you accept any project though, you should check to see if you can complete the transcribing project in the time allotted.
What Kind Of Work Does Rev Offer?
Captioner: create timed captions for videos
Transcriptionist: type what is being said through audio and video
Translator: translate documents from one language to another
How Does Rev Work?
It’s pretty simple if you are one of the lucky ones that get accepted,
- You select your own schedule
- You select a project that you would like to take
- You get paid weekly through PayPal
Like I said earlier, you have the option to select projects at your convenience. Once you select a project, you make an obligation, a commitment to complete their project.
If you want to continue to complete projects and be successful at it, your best bet for success is to start small and expand at your own speed.
How Do I Get Hired?
When you go here, your first step is to fill out your first, last name and email address.
From there, they will ask you some general sentence structure questions. If you pass the 21 sentence structure question steps, then you go to the next phase of their application.
The next phase consists of transcribing. You will get instructions on how Rev would like their transcribing format to be for a video or audio.
The general gist though is that they want people who are able to type with good grammatical skills along with accuracy.
Once you implement what you learned and how Rev would like their audio or video transcribed, you will submit your transcribed work and wait for the results.
I’m sure you’re curious how long it will take to get your results, it usually takes a couple of days for Rev to contact you.
Rev contacts you via email and will let you know whether your application was accepted or declined.
What If I Was Declined?
I know It’s a bummer if you didn’t get accepted. Don’t be too bummed out because you can reapply after 45 days.
In the meantime though, I would suggest you check out Mturk and find some transcribing tasks there. This way you can earn some extra money and get practice transcribing audio to master your skills.
The Pay And How Do I Get Paid?
- Transcribing pays $0.40 up to $0.65 per audio minute.
- Captioner pays $0.40 up to $0.75 per video minute.
- Translator pays $0.05 up to $0.07 per word.
What is really cool about REV is that you get paid every week on a Tuesday via PayPal.
The average income earner is around $245 per month and the top monthly earnings are $1495.
I’m sure when starting off, your earnings are not going to be average, actually, it will probably be less than $245 per month. Most people who start off get the easy jobs that probably don’t pay as much.
I’m sure Rev does this because despite whether a job is easy and convenient, people tend to slack off at times.
If you look at it from Rev’s perspective, Rev wants to keep good contracts coming in along with transcribers that are skilled and are willing to do the work.
When you start off, you may not get the most exciting pay, but if you keep at it, you will start to build your skills along with better pay.
So know that advancements are there if that is what you are aiming for.
Not So Cool
There is always the not so cool attributes with every job.
I’ve said this before on my site and that is nothing is perfect.
What is not so cool regarding Rev especially when starting off, is that the pay may not be exactly what great.
Another not so cool attribute is that if you’re not a skilled writer or if writing is not your thing, you may have a difficult time getting hired.
Now before you start to get discouraged, people tend to think they are very bad writers or have bad grammatical skills and most of the time that is not the case.
So Don’t count Rev out, I would suggest you just apply and see where it goes. If you don’t get accepted you can look here for other opportunities, if you do get accepted, then you know your writing skills are not as bad as you think.
I know that some of you live in areas where PayPal is not available. If that is you, I’m sorry, but unfortunately, PayPal is the way that Rev pays.
All In All
If transcribing is your thing, then you may want to check out Rev. It’s a really cool way to earn money at your convenience.
Again, once you get accepted, you can start accepting projects ASAP and get paid weekly.
Who doesn’t like getting paid weekly from the comfort of their own home? Every week you get paid via PayPal and you can accept projects and your convenience.
If you don’t get accepted, don’t worry you can try again in 45 days and in the meantime, check out Mturk and do some small transcribing tasks there.
