I’m doing a review on Russell Brunson’s List Hacking because of the review I did on Stone Evan’s Plugin Profit Site.
List Hacking is one of the 5 programs that Stone recommends people try though the Plug-in Profit Site.
I’m not against building a list, but a list is something I don’t recommend you do right away.
When I reviewed what List Hacking had to offer, my impression is that Russell seems to focus on a list more than what the product people may have to offer for their future list or buyers.
I believe that a product should be of value to hear me out more, I recommend you read my review about List Hacking.

What is List Hacking aka LH?
- LH is a coaching system that is supposed to help you build a list through squeeze pages.
How does it work?
- You can sign up for free for 14 days. LH offers daily tasks to help you build your list.
How much does it cost?
- After the 14-day free trial, you would pay $97 a month.
Who can join?
We all know that in order to make money you have to have something to sell.
If you’re considering building a list without a product to sell, then what is the point.
When I did my research on LH, in my opinion, it appears to be for newbies.
Even the people who were promoting LH seem to say the same thing.
If you don’t have a product to sell, why would you start off by building a list?
The reason why the product should come first is that you would be selling a specific product to a group of people.
For instance, how could you sell dog clothes to someone who doesn’t own a dog?
Anyhow, let’s start with the videos that LH offers.
I saw the first video of Russell and he seems to be like a pretty nice guy. I like how he told his personal story. I wanted to dig a little deeper about what he had to offer, so I placed an email address.
After placing an email, there were a series of videos. The second video was called junk mail.
My impression about Russell in his second video was that he sure has that entrepreneurial spirit. What intrigued me the most was when he was a preteen, he invested his money in some stamp.
What he did was asked his parents to buy him stamps for the money he made from mowing lawns.
The way he obtained his list is through the white pages of the yellow pages. What Russell did was have a sales page written up and mailed out his sales page to the list he gathered through the phone book. He stated he didn’t make any money, but I thought the story was so cute.
In video three, Russell discussed how List Hacking System works. I was waiting for Russell to explain how much value a product would be, but he did put much value on the products that people would sell.
What it seemed like to me was a way to build a list quickly.
I personally feel that if you don’t have the product you stand behind, why even start building a list. You don’t want to sell junk to people to just make a buck because it could leave you with a soiled reputation. Also if you want to build a business it should be a win-win situation where someone gets value with the product or service you have to sell.
Russell also got into splash pages which I’m not a fan of. I know for me, every time I come across one of those splash pages, they usually make those ridiculous offers just to tempt people into giving their info into one of these splash pages. For me, that seems like a desperate tactic because they never seem to be as honest.
Another thing that I believe is that the Internet is infested with these splash pages that people start to get hip to the game.
People want to know what you got to offer and if it’s of value, some people will buy and others may want to get more info and others who will not buy at all.
The fourth video was about charity. It was a very nice video that had his lovely wife, another member who won a trip and Russell.
They went to Kenya and they showed how they were building a school for the community.
I’m not going to hate on charity, I think charity is a great thing and helping people is a wonderful service.
List Hacking Is AKA DotComSecrets
Russell did explain his reason’s why he changed his business name from DotComSecrets to List Hacking.
In a nutshell, he said it was because he wanted “YOU” to make money before you pay for his service.
He said with DotComSecrets, he charged $5,000 for his coaching system. Now he wanted people to get a 14-day free trial and lower his price to $97 a month.
According to Russell, DotComSecrets was featured on the major TV Networks and on one of Virgin Airline’s airplane.
I don’t know about you, but for me, if my business was getting that much play and have that much success, I wouldn’t change anything.
Russell did explain why he changed his business name, but I was thinking, why not just add a monthly rate for people who couldn’t pay five grand up front?
I started to think about why anyone would change a business name when a business has so much play.
Why Would A Company Change Their Name?
I decided to research why a company would change its name. I found out 4 of the most common reasons,
- Bad Reputation
- Financial Issues
- Change of Ownership
- Business Merging
As you can see from the top 4 reasons, it’s not all bad. According to Russell, he got good play from major networks plus good advertisement from Virgin Airlines. He also stated he has lots of success helping people so why just add a lower rate so people can get access to his services.
What I did was a little more digging about DotComSecrets. I did a little more digging because of the play he was getting.
When I did my research, I really didn’t find anything extremely bad about DCS.
I did find some billing errors, but it was only a few. I personally came to the conclusion that maybe people are just not willing to pay $5,000 for coaching.
Maybe that is why Russell changed the name and lowered the price. A new name is almost like a new business.
How Much Is It Really Going To Cost?
As you already know you get a 14-day free trial. After the trial, you would be paying $97 a month.
According to Russell’s math, you will need 100 people on your list to make back $97.
I don’t think it’s impossible to gather 100 people on your list. How long is it going to take is what you should be asking yourself. One thing I know is that 14 days go by quite quickly.
I also want you to know that looking into your expenses before you join anything doesn’t hurt. We all know that it takes money to make money, but it also doesn’t hurt to decide if the fees are feasible.
Here is what you are looking at roughly to build a list with LH,
- $97 a month for List Hacking
- $19 a month starting off with Aweber
- $100 a month for solo ads
These fees are just for the list building part of building your business. I looked into how DotComSecrets works and they recommend you buy hosting through GVO.
I also learned that DCS had up-sells, so don’t be surprised if you are offered more up-sells.
Think About This
Before you think about going this route if you have a product to sell why go this route? You could just ad a list to your website.
I know some of you are in these types of MLM businesses, and you may consider list hacking to get more referrals. I personally tried the MLM route and I wrote why it’s not for me. One of the reasons is that the advertisement can get quite expensive on top of the fees you pay for the business you joined.
If you don’t have a product at all to sell, maybe you should think about that first. Even Russell said in his third video that you need a product to sell.
I Don’t Have A Product What Do I Do?
I personally feel you should stand behind the products you sell. If you don’t have your own personal product to sell, then maybe you should consider Affiliate Marketing.
You can use a service like Amazon and promote their products and services and make money by building your own website.
What About The List?
You could build a list through your own website. You would actually be targeting people who are interested in the items you recommend to people through your website.
All you have to do is add an autoresponder to your website and people will sign up. You can also make sales without any ever joining your list though SEO.
All In All
I want people to know when building a business even if it’s online, it takes time. Nothing happens as quickly as what some of these Guru’s claims.
Even with building a list, it takes time to build. It’s also important to build a list with relevant people that are interested in the product or service that you are offering to people.
A website is not a bad idea to build a list. If you think about it, everything you land online is some sort of website and it’s where we all go to get info.
If you personally don’t know how to gain traffic or need more info about a list, then I highly suggest you check out My #1 Heroic Site.
