Shadow Shopper Review: Why There’s Not A Need

The way I came across Shadow Shopper is through a comment I got from a review I did.

I told Shery that I would check it out and write a review about Shadow Shopper.

When I got to their site, I was a little disappointed.

I felt what Shadow Shopper had to offer anyone can find out the info on their own.

In my Shadow Shopper’s review, I will let you know why there is no need.

My Take

Mystery/Secret shoppers have been happening for years.

I’ve been on both sides of the table in my younger days.

Once when I worked in retail and I also was a secret shopper before the Internet took off the way it did in today’s times.

Secret/Mystery Shopping is a legit way to earn some extra cash.

With the Internet, a lot of scams gave secret/mystery shopping a bad name.

Before you think about becoming a secret/mystery shopper, not every service is perfect.

Some services don’t reimburse you for the products you purchased, some functions take a while to pay, and others may have strict guidelines.

That info is essential to know before you get into any service.

If this is a way you’d like to make some extra money, you’re going to have to do your due diligence and learn where the real services get provided.

Let’s Start With My Experience

I will quickly let you know my experience on both ends.

When I worked in retail my boss came to me and told me a Mystery Shopper evaluated me.

I was like, oh no, Lol. I was trying to think who it was.

I listen to what my boss was telling me and I was listening for the words he or she, but that never occurred.

He kept saying the shopper!

Anyhow, it turned out I didn’t up-sold the Mystery Shopper, other than that I did okay.

The Way I Became A Secret Shopper

I wanted to make some extra money that was flexible, I happened to see an ad in the paper.

I called the number and a woman told me the store she was hiring for and she would send me my assignments through snail mail.

I got my first assignment. I had to spend my own money to purchase food and answer a series of questions.

It was pretty simple. I then filled out the report and sent the receipt of what I purchased.

The questions I answered were about the service I received, about the facility I went to, the name of the employee, I can’t remember every question, but you get the idea.

After filling out the report and sending my receipt, I got reimbursed for the money I spent.

It took about a couple of weeks for them to send me a check. I can’t remember how much I got paid per store, I think it was around $30 bucks per assignment.

It’s a fun way to make some extra cash. You get to go out for lunch or shop and after that. you fill out a report and make some cash.

So now that I gave you my experience, let’s get into why I said that people shouldn’t bother with a service like SS aka Shadow shopper.

Who Are Secret/Mystery Shoppers For?

It’s for anyone who likes to shop and make some extra cash. It’s also good for people who are very observant.

Secret/Mystery shopping is not money you can live off of, but extra cash for doing something a person enjoys.

It’s also a pretty simple way to make money while you shop.

How Much Money Can You Make?

The amount of money that can get made is a hard question to answer. It depends on the area you live in and the number of companies in need in a demographic region.

If you live in a rural area, you may have limited assignments rather than someone who lives in a more metropolitan area.

Also, the pay depends on the assignment you are going to take. It can be as little as $5 dollars or as high as $50 dollars.

How Does Shadow Shoppers Offers People Jobs?

shadow shopper available jobs

What you do, is enter your zip code in the box. Then it will show you a list of companies looking for Mystery/Secret Shoppers in your area.

You can then sign up for a free bronze membership, but to get the latest listings, you would need to pay for their Gold Membership.

I’m going to warn people now, just because you get a listing of available jobs, doesn’t mean you will get hired.

You still would have to apply for these jobs. So paying for the Gold Membership fee may not be a feasible way.

The Memberships

Shadow Shoppers has Two Memberships…!

  • Bronze
  • Gold

It doesn’t hurt to check any service out for free, and I do like the fact that SS does give people an option to check it out before they pay for their service.

The thing is, should people pay for something that lists services that you can find yourself for free?

I understand that SS caters to a specific type of opportunity, but there are other free options available.

The Difference Between Bronze And Gold Memberships

Bronze

Bronze is a free service. First, you sign up for free, and what the Bronze membership provides people with is information.

It doesn’t hurt to read and learn about Mystery shopping if you’re interested in taking that route. You get access to

  • University articles
  • Mystery shopping certificate test
  • Emails of job listings
  • $5 dollar credit towards Gold Membership

Gold

The Gold Membership requires a fee.

You get a $4.95 30 day trial. It’s $99.95 per year or you can pay $37.95 for 3 months per year.

Note: you do not get your money back once you pay.

You do get everything a Bronze Member would get plus

  • Listings of Companies that offer assignments
  • Fill out your Biography
  • Get priority emails of jobs posted

Complaints

ss bbb complaints

I read many complaints across the net. The main complaint was mainly about billing issues.

People mainly said they cancel their account, but they were still getting billed from SS.

I went to BBB and read some of their complaints, but I’m going to give Shadow Shopper some credit because they did resolve a number of their complaints.

Is Shadow Shopper A Scam?

NOPE! I’m personally not a fan of people paying for information like what SS offers. I also don’t recommend anyone using sites like these.

Why I said SS is not a scam because SS does offer a free version to check out, plus they only cater to Mystery/Secret shopping jobs.

I also noticed that SS does seem transparent with what they offer.

I Also Want To Express,

Paying a fee and getting emails always seems like you’re gonna get what you want. I still suggest otherwise because like I stated earlier, the info you are getting you can get for FREE.

Sometimes you just gotta hustle.

My Suggestions About The Hustle

If you’re going to dive into Secret/Mystery shopping, I would highly suggest checking out forums that are all about Secret/Mystery Shopping.

This way you can communicate with other shoppers that have experience in the field.

The reason why this is a good way is that there are no fees, you can learn from other experience shoppers, get info about good companies that pay, plus you can avoid Mystery/Secret shopping scams.

The Forum I suggest you start with is WAHM. WAHM will give you a number of other forums to go to and valuable tips.

  • Legitimate mystery shopping companies
  • Mobile Apps
  • Legit Couponing
  • and more

There are a number of other forums online, but I would suggest starting at WAHM first.

You can also Google Forums that are specifically for Mystery/Secret shoppers. You can also go to social sites that may have a group of Mystery/Secret Shoppers.

What To Look For In Forums or Online

The first thing you should do is go to Google and search for Mystery Shoppers Forums or Secret Shopper Forums.

You can also Type in Mystery/Secret Shoppers Facebook for any of your favorite social sites. You may come across some good ones.

I also suggest, if anyone ask you for any money, just move on.

Do not give anyone the time of day if anyone asks for a dime.

Remember, this is a job or an assignment that these companies want you to complete.

So when you’re looking at doing a service for someone, you shouldn’t have to pay a fee, even if it’s an independent contractual type “job”.

Look to see how active the forums are. If it’s a very active forum you may get some great information from other active members.

If you go to social sites, again active is key. Look at the date of the last post, if it’s current, then you are more likely to get current info.

I also suggest you be active in these forums. Ask questions, see if anyone answers. If Secret/Mystery shopping is what you want to do, sometimes you have to hustle. The ones who push are the ones who succeed.

All In All

I first want to thank the person who left a comment about Shadow Shoppers, her name is Shery, from a review I did regarding MyFlexJob.
I’ve done a number of reviews that require a payment for information similar to Shadow Shoppers.

The most profound reason why I suggest people don’t bother is that you can get the info you’re searching for, for free.

I’ve always stated that it’s best to just look up the info yourself. I find that paying for info like what Shadow Shopper offers is a waste of money.

Like I said in this review, you can go to forums, or you can check Christina’s site and meet a real Secret/Mystery Shoppers who have done this before and learn from her.
